Focal length is the distance between the center of a lens or curved mirror and its focus.
A large sensor is necessary for advertisements or studio based shoots. They can also cope better when shooting in dark situations. A smaller sensor is good for wildlife and sports photography, due to the crop factor. Cameras with smaller sensors can take more images due to their frames per second.
In these two portrait images, the image on the left is taken with a wide angle lens which gets a clear picture with the man and countryside in the background. The image on the left is taken with a zoom lens which only clearly shows the man and has a blurred background.
Wide = Higher field of view (see more around the subject) - context this particular style can be used for
Zoom = Smaller field of view (less around subject, focal length creates depth of field) - context
1. background
2. power - low angle (rugby)
The wide angle lens creates a higher field of view which allows you to see more behind the man. This is used in sport to create a powerful effect. The low angle creates this effect also with it showing that the man is big and powerful.
The image on the right creates a smaller field of view and the focal length creates depth of field. This could be used on wedding photos to create a more zoomed in effect.
